Dams are currently Cape Town’s main source of water but due to a prolonged drought combined with a variety of political, human migration, climate and other factors, levels have dropped to a historic low. The city is implementing an aggressive program to help its citizens drop their water consumption rapidly, while also working around the clock to bring alternate sources online. Cape Town usually experiences winter rains in June. So the entire city is in a race against time to stretch its dwindling supplies to last until the June rains and alternate sources arrive. If Day Zero arrives, cape Town will have its taps turned off, a prospect that can have major health and economic repercussions.
